April is National Counseling Awareness Month – a time to shine a light on seeking professional support and normalize having a therapist. However, so many never take the first step to getting support because finding the right therapist for YOU can sound like a daunting task. Many also back away due to stories from friends and family who have had bad experiences due to the wrong match with a therapist. With that in mind…what exactly makes a good therapist? How do you know if they're the right fit for you? Let's delve into these questions and more so you feel confident getting the right support and partnership for you!

What Makes a Good Therapist?

A good therapist possesses a unique blend of qualities and skills that make them effective in helping individuals navigate their mental health challenges. Here are some key characteristics to look for:

  • Empathy and Compassion: A good therapist listens attentively and demonstrates genuine empathy and compassion towards their clients. They create a safe and supportive space for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings without judgment.

  • Expertise and Training: Look for therapists who have received proper training and hold relevant certifications or licenses in their field.   • What experience do you have in treating [specific issue you're dealing with]?

  • What are your fees and do you accept insurance?

  • What is your availability for appointments?

  • How do you handle emergencies or crises outside of regular sessions?

How to Know When a Therapist Isn't a Good Fit

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you may find that a therapist isn't the right fit for you. First off, that’s okay! It happens, it’s normal, and you do not need to stay with a therapist you don’t feel like you have the right fit with. 

Here are some signs that indicate it may be time to consider finding a new therapist:

  • Lack of Connection: If you don't feel a strong connection or rapport with your therapist, it may be difficult to open up and make progress in therapy.

  • Mismatched Goals: If your therapist's goals for therapy don't align with your own or if you feel like they're not addressing your concerns adequately, it may be time to reevaluate the fit.
