Resources, Connection + Growth: National Infertility Awareness Week
“Infertility affects at least 12 percent of all women up to the age of 44, and studies suggest Black women may be almost twice as likely to experience infertility as white women. Yet only about 8 percent of Black women between the ages of 25 and 44 seek medical help to get pregnant, compared to 15 percent of white women.” (Source: Womenshealthmag.com)
National Infertility Awareness Week®, (NIAW) is a movement founded in 1989 by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association and it takes place this week--April 18-24, 2021. RESOLVE’s mission is to empower all people who are challenged in their family-building journey through sharing knowledge, community support, opportunities to advocate, and ways to act. They seek to change the conversation around infertility.
From The National Infertility Association: “All too often myths and misinformation appear in media stories or influence lawmakers and companies to enforce policies that create barriers for people who need help building their family. And still people feel isolated when they struggle to build a family, so we want to empower them to share their story and find a community that cares.”
This week, and every week, we at NCCC are here to support, hold space, advocate, and help process the ways infertility affects you, your family, and your community. The following resources are from infertility experts, families with stories to share, support group connections, and more.
And please remember, whether infertility directly affects you and your family or not, space for compassion, understanding, and growth is important for all of us. Let’s treat each other, not as problems to be solved, but as human beings to be loved.
